Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a nose job, is a procedure designed to reshape or enhance the appearance of the nose. This can involve reducing the size, straightening, raising or lowering the nasal profile, removing bumps or ridges, and contouring the shape of the nose to align the bridge with the tip

Nose Job
Rhinoplasty can be performed using various techniques. The surgeon may make an incision either under the nasal rim or inside the nostrils, allowing them to separate the soft tissue from the underlying bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage are then reshaped to achieve the desired look, and the skin is closed with fine sutures to minimise scarring. If you have a deviated septum, it can be corrected during the surgery to improve breathing. To reduce bleeding during the procedure, your surgeon may use nasal drops to constrict blood vessels.

ANAESTHETIC
General anaesthesia – discussed with your surgeon
PRE-OPERATIVE CARE
Before your surgery, inform your surgeon of any allergies, medical conditions, and medications you are currently taking, including both prescription and non-prescription drugs. To minimise the risk of post-operative bleeding, avoid aspirin and any medications containing aspirin for two weeks prior to surgery. You should also stop smoking 1-2 months before the procedure, as smoking can interfere with anaesthesia and slow down the healing process. If you have hypertension, be sure to inform your surgeon.
POST OPERATIVE CARE
After surgery, your surgeon may recommend wearing a splint to support the nasal bones, which usually remains in place for about two weeks. Gauze packing might also be placed inside your nose to prevent bleeding, typically removed the day after surgery. For the first three days following the procedure, it’s important to rest and avoid activities that could increase your heart rate, as this can lead to further bleeding and swelling.
Keep your head elevated and stay in a cool environment. Apply cold packs to the nose, eyes, and cheeks to reduce swelling. Avoid disturbing the nasal area or attempting to remove any scabs to prevent damaging the surgical site.
RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS
Knowing what complications may arise, as well as what can prevent them, will help patients enjoy a positive experience.
As with any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty carries certain risks and potential complications.
Excessive bleeding |
Infection |
Adverse reaction to anaesthesia |
Need for additional procedures
It's crucial to follow your surgeon's post-operative instructions carefully to minimise the risk of complications and ensure the best possible outcome.
IMPORTANT
Every surgical or invasive procedure comes with risks. It's advisable to seek a second opinion from a qualified healthcare professional before proceeding.
