Lipofilling is a cosmetic procedure that uses a person’s own fat to enhance volume or correct irregularities in specific areas of the body.
Procedure Name:
Lipofilling
Common Names:
Fat Transfer
Fat Grafting
Fat Injection
During the procedure, fat is harvested from the patient’s own body, typically from areas like the abdomen, buttocks, or inner/outer thighs (referred to as the ‘donor site’). This is done through small incisions of 3-5 mm, which are then sutured. The collected fat is purified to extract only the fat cells and stem cells that will be used for filling. The purified fat is injected into the soft tissue of the recipient site(s) using a small cannula, leaving no visible scars. It’s often necessary for the surgeon to collect and inject more fat than required, as some fat cells may be reabsorbed by the immune system. On average, about 30-75% of the injected fat cells will survive.

General anesthesia – discussed with your surgeon
Before surgery, inform your surgeon of any allergies, medical conditions, and any medications you are currently taking, including both prescription and over-the-counter. To minimise the risk of post-operative bleeding, avoid aspirin and any medication containing aspirin for two weeks before surgery. Additionally, stop smoking 1-2 months before the procedure, as smoking can affect how your body reacts to anaesthetic and slow down the healing process. Patients with high blood pressure should inform their surgeon prior to surgery.
After lipofilling, bruising, swelling, discomfort, tenderness, and mild numbness may occur at both the donor and recipient sites. These symptoms usually subside within about three days. A cold pack or compress may be provided to reduce swelling in the first few hours after surgery. A special garment must be worn for 4-6 weeks to support the treated area. For the first three weeks, avoid wearing bras or constrictive clothing, and refrain from heavy activities like lifting for at least one week.
The recovery period varies for each person, but most patients experience improvement within three days. While some swelling and bruising may remain, most people are satisfied with the results and can return to work and normal activities within 7-14 days, often using makeup to cover any visible bruising.
Knowing what complications may arise, as well as what can prevent them, will help patients enjoy a positive experience. As with any surgical procedure, lipofilling carries risks and potential complications, which may include:
Infection | Excessive bleeding | Adverse reaction to anaesthesia | Need for additional procedures | Asymmetry
It's crucial to follow your surgeon's post-operative instructions carefully to minimise the risk of complications and ensure the best possible outcome.
Every surgical or invasive procedure comes with risks. It's advisable to seek a second opinion from a qualified healthcare professional before proceeding.
